We invite you to lean in, be curious, and engage in honest dialogue about racial equity, justice, and belonging to co-create a state government system that works for everyone.

50 Years of Bailadores de Bronce

Thursday, October 13, 2022, 12 pm to 1 pm| Zoom Registration

The Bailadores de Bronce are a Seattle-based Mexican traditional dance and music group that first formed at the UW in 1972. Bailadores de Bronce portray the positive aspects of the Mexican culture in the broader community, breaking down cultural barriers and building bridges within the community.

In this webinar, the Bailadores de Bronce Executive Director Adrian Olivas will discuss their 50-year history, present highlights, and talk about how their performances reflect the richness and diversity of Mexican and Mexican American cultures. Adrian will share how through music and dance, the Bailadores de Bronce create a bridge of understanding among all people by sharing culture, preserving traditions, and instilling pride in youth.

What's in a Name?

A Community by Many Other Name(s)

In this webinar, members of the Latino Leadership Network will discuss how the community has been historically known and referred to in the United States. While there is no consensus within the community of what our name should be, historical and current debates about nomenclature reveal the complexities of immigration, acculturation, and identity for this diverse group. We will engage in conversation about names such as Latino/a/e/x, Hispanic, Boricua, Chicano/a/e/x, and others, to learn about the community's heritage, roots, and markers of identity.

Seattle-based Alfredo Arreguin is an internationally known and recognized visual artist of Mexican descent. Within the Latino community, he is recognized as a Maestro, a term of respect that alludes to both his talent and experience as a teacher and mentor.

In this webinar, Maestro Arreguin will discuss his inspiration, career highlights, and the techniques of his pattern painting style, which reflects his Mexican and Pacific Northwest roots. Arreguin has been recognized as “an artist of magic, mystery, and revelation whose place in the history of North American art has already been secured,” critic Lauro Flores writes in his book about the artist.
