What's in a Name?

A Community by Many Other Name(s)

Thursday, October 6, 12 pm to 1 pm| Zoom Registration

In this webinar, members of the Latino Leadership Network will discuss how the community has been historically known and referred to in the United States. While there is no consensus within the community of what our name should be, historical and current debates about nomenclature reveal the complexities of immigration, acculturation, and identity for this diverse group. We will engage in conversation about names such as Latino/a/e/x, Hispanic, Boricua, Chicano/a/e/x, and others, to learn about the community's heritage, roots, and markers of identity.

Description:

Let's face it, change is as incessant as life - things change whether we embrace it or not. We know this. We all have expectations for change. Nine out of every 10 people believe their lives will be very different in five years' time. However one in three people would avoid change if they could.

Alan Toffler, the famous futurologist stated, “The illiterate of the future will not be those who cannot read and write, but will be those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.” When we can alter our thought patterns to adjust for new circumstances, we are more flexible to life in general, which builds our resiliency and increases our happiness.

Chief Administrative Law Judge Lorraine Lee and Legal Administrative Manager Connie Becker will bring us some understanding about the change process and provide us some information and tools to help you be more receptive and adaptable to change.

About the Presenters:

Lorraine Lee has served as Chief Administrative Law Judge of the Washington State Office of Administrative Hearings, OAH, since July 2009. Gov. Jay Inslee reappointed Lee in 2020 for another five-year term. Her public service career includes varied positions in state government over the past 20 years. From 2002 to 2009, Lee worked at the Liquor Control Board, LCB, first as the licensing director and, in 2006, became LCB chair. She has also been a staff attorney with the Washington State Court of Appeals (Division II), an assistant director at the Washington Lottery, and Policy Advisor for former governor's Gary Locke and Mike Lowry on criminal justice issues and matters relating to the courts.

In the early 1990s, Lee was an appellate lawyer with the Washington Appellate Defender Association, representing indigent criminal defendants before the Washington State Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals (Division I). From 1984 to 1990, Lee served as a captain in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps, representing soldiers at courts-martial and on appeal, and was an administrative law attorney advising military commanders.

She received her law degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo Law School and her undergraduate degree from the University of Washington. Lee is also the executive sponsor of the Washington state Business Resource Group: Washington Immigrant Network, WIN.

Legal Administrative Manager Connie Becker has been at the Office of Administrative Hearings in the Spokane Valley since August 2019. Becker previously worked as a Paralegal and Legal Administrator for more than 25 years. Becker earned a Bachelor's degree in German from Western Washington University, a paralegal certificate from Highline Community College, and an Master's degree and Master's certificate in human resources management from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Becker also serves as ICSEW's vice chair.
